MINERAL DEPOSIT SITES IN UGANDA

Uganda is rich in a wide range of mineral resources that give the country strong economic potential. Some of the most important minerals include gold, copper, cobalt, limestone, and phosphates. Gold mining mainly takes place in the Busia district in eastern Uganda and in the Karamoja region in the northeast, where activities are largely carried out by artisanal and small-scale miners. Copper and cobalt occur at the Kilembe mines near Kasese in western Uganda. These mines were once very productive but have experienced operational difficulties over the years.

Limestone, which is a key raw material for cement manufacturing, is widely extracted in areas such as Hima and Tororo, supporting Uganda’s growing construction sector. Phosphate deposits, used in fertilizer production, are found in the Sukulu Hills near Tororo. In addition, minerals such as tin, tungsten, and rare earth elements are present in southwestern Uganda, particularly in the Kabale and Kisoro areas.

Despite this mineral abundance, Uganda’s mining industry is still relatively underdeveloped, with most activities remaining small-scale and informal. The government has made efforts to attract foreign investment and improve infrastructure in order to better harness these resources. For example, increased exploration has taken place in the Karamoja region, which is known for its gold and marble deposits, while oil discoveries in the Albertine Graben have highlighted the region’s wider resource potential. Nonetheless, the sector continues to face challenges, including weak regulation, environmental risks, and limited value addition. Ongoing reforms aim to formalize mining activities and promote sustainable practices so that Uganda can gain greater economic benefits while reducing negative environmental and social impacts.
